Choosing the correct size 20" BMX BIke
20" BMX bikes may look the same buth they are designed with various frame sizes to accommodate riders of different heights and body proportions. When it comes to 20" BMX bikes, the top bar size, commonly referred to as the top tube length, is an essential measurement for determining the correct bike size.
The top tube length is the horizontal distance from the seat tube to the head tube of the bike frame. It plays a significant role in determining the reach and overall fit of the bike. A suitable top tube length ensures that the rider has a comfortable reach to the handlebars and will be able to control the bike easily. To long for a young rider and they won't be able to lift the front end and the front will want to nose dive which can be dangerous if attempting jumps.
Kids:
For younger riders, such as children between the ages of 6 and 10, a 20" BMX bike with a top tube length around 18"-19" may be suitable. This size provides a compact frame and shorter reach, making it easier for kids to handle the bike.
As kids grow taller or become more experienced, they might benefit from slightly longer top tube lengths, ranging from 19"-20.5". This adjustment allows for better balance and stability as they develop their riding skills.
Adults:
Adult riders generally require larger frame sizes with longer top tube lengths. For most adult riders, a 20" BMX bike with a top tube length ranging from 20"-21.25" can be appropriate. This size offers a more spacious cockpit, enabling adults to have a comfortable riding position and better control.
However, it's essential to consider individual preferences and body proportions. Some riders might prefer shorter or longer top tube lengths based on their riding style, personal comfort, or body dimensions.
Remember, the top tube length is just one factor in determining the right bike size. Other aspects like seat height, handlebar height & width, should also be considered to ensure a comfortable and efficient riding experience.
